SELECTING YOUR FASTENER

STEP 1

Finish

Choose the level of fastener durability you need

  • BRIGHT

    Uncoated, ideal for indoor use.

  • GALVANISED

    Zinc coated for greater corrosion resistance, for indoor and covered outdoor use.

  • HOT DIPPED GALVANISED

    Thicker galvanised coating, for use in uncovered outdoor applications.

  • STAINLESS STEEL

    Maximum corrosion protection, ideal for exposed outdoor applications with high moisture levels.

STEP 2

LENGTH

  • FOR WOOD TO WOOD FIXING

    Choose a nail or staple three times longer than the thickness of the material you are fastening.

  • FOR THIN MATERIALS

    Have at least 25 mm penetration.

STEP 3

DIAMETER

  • NARROWER DIAMETER NAILS

    Are less likely to split the wood when nailing close to the edge of the timber.

  • WIDER DIAMETER NAILS

    Are more resistant to bending and shearing, especially with larger and denser timbers.

STEP 4

SHANK

FIRST FIX NAILS ARE AVAILABLE WITH DIFFERENT SHANK PROFILES ACCORDING TO PERFORMANCE AND APPLICATION

  • PLAIN

    Easier to drive, ideal for general use.

  • BARBED

    Herringbone pattern increases holding power compared to plain.

  • SPIRAL

    Wood fibres wrap around the spirals for extra grip and pull out resistance.

  • RING

    The highest resistance to pull out, giving a strong hold in soft and medium density wood.

Note that the more holding power a shank type provides the greater the power needed to drive the nail into the wood.
